Robert LeRoy Burtis passed away on May 27, 2020, following a series of health complications. Robert was born in Queens, NY on November 12, 1944, to Frank Gardner Burtis and Elizabeth Catherine Burtis (Winters). He grew up in Freeport, Long Island, and graduated from Freeport High School in 1963. Following graduation, he studied at the University of the Americas in Mexico City, Mexico until 1964. In 1965 he enlisted in US Air Force, where he served at Tyndall AFB and at RAF Bentwaters and Lakenheath USAFB in the United Kingdom until 1969. While serving in the UK, he met and married Pamela Killen, and became a father to his daughter, Dawn. Upon leaving the Air Force, Robert found employment with United Airlines, where he worked for 28 years as a flight dispatcher, in New York, New Jersey, Ohio, and Illinois. A lifelong aviation enthusiast, Robert earned his private pilot’s license in the 1970s. After moving to Chicago in 1979, he met and married Rae Snyder, and became a father to his two sons, Robert and Ryan. Upon leaving United Airlines, he fulfilled his dream of working as a pilot for Raytheon Corporation. He spent his final years in Melbourne, Florida. Robert was a devoted and loving father to his 3 children, and grandfather to his three grandchildren. He also loved anything aviation related, Chicago Cubs baseball, and telling stories about his service in the Air Force. He is survived by his daughter, Dawn Chavez (Burtis), sons Robert Burtis and Ryan Burtis, sister Beverly Ruggiero (Burtis), and grandchildren Noah, Analiesa, and Amelia Chavez. His final resting place will be at the Florida National Cemetery in Lake Worth, Florida. Donations in his memory can be made to the Air Force Aid Society or the Tri-County Animal Rescue.
